RIVER NEWS - November 2017

The Changing of the Seasons

While it feels like summer was just last week, it’s time to say goodbye to the goblins and ghouls and usher in the busy holiday season. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to reflect and appreciate how wonderful is to live and play along the shores of this river. Even those who have spent a lifetime plying Bass River daily can find something new and surprising while navigating its twists and turns. Right now is a fabulous time for wildlife viewing. Most of the summer visiting shorebirds have migrated south and have been replaced by a variety of wintering ducks. Eiders, which primarily eat shellfish, and Red-Breasted Mergansers, known to travel as fast as 100 miles an hour, have been spotted along the banks and in secluded coves of the river. Before winter's chill fully engulfs our area, take a moment to look for these amazing winter residents. FOBR is thankful for your continued support and is busy planning for 2018.

Become a Founding Family

We are grateful for the generosity of many of you for contributing to FOBR this year, and look forward to your continued kindness in the future. Without a broad swath of community support, this rescue mission will not be possible. Some families have gone above and beyond by becoming a Founding Family. Friends of Bass River will wrap up our Founding Families program in the next few weeks, but there is still time to join us! These one-time gifts of $2,500 or more help secure a strong foundation on which to build our river’s support system. We would like to thank the following families for their exceptional generosity:

Sherry and Alan Leventhal
The Palmer & Jane D. Davenport Foundation
Mr. and Mrs. DeWitt D. Davenport
Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Churchill, Jr.
The Reverend and Mrs. Mark S. Anschutz

 Saturday, November 18th- River Cleanup

We need your help for one last 2017 clean up! The recent storms have deposited a lot of trash and unnatural debris along the shore that needs to be removed before the cold weather settles in. Starting at 10 a.m. at Bass River Beach (aka Smuggler’s Beach), we will break off into small teams to visit public access points along the river. We should be done by noon. Trash bags, gloves will be provided. Dress for the weather and bring your enthusiasm!
